Windows 7 Handy Feature 1: Problem Steps Recorder

Ever had problems with programs and tried o describe them to the local computer fixer-upper guy, but have no idea how to clearly describe what's going on? It's frustrating, but Microsoft feels your pain, and Windows 7 will include an excellent new solution in the Problem Steps Recorder.

When any program starts misbehaving under Windows 7 then all you need do is click Start, type PSR and press Enter, then click Start Record. If you then work through whatever your're doing then the Problem Steps Recorder will record every click and keypress, take screen grabs, and package everything up into a single zipped MHTML file when you're finshed, ready for emailing to your local computer geek for analysis.

It's quick, easy and effective, and will save you hours of troubleshooting time.

ADSL 10 Mbps upgrade update

Telkom started their 10 Mbps ADSL upgrades, a process which is likely to take 7 days to complete

Telkom started their planned 10 Mbps ADSL upgrades this weekend where some 4 Mbps subscribers will get access to higher speeds.

Numerous SAIX notices related to ‘planned work’ scheduled on 6 August and 8 August were published on Friday, informing stakeholders that “All 4Mbps users will be upgraded to a service speed of 10Mbps” in certain regions.  These upgrades applied to 4Mbps ADSL Users on Metro-Ethernet and ADSL2+ enabled exchanges.

According to unofficial information the planned migration of around 19,000 4 Mbps ADSL services which began at 20:00 on Friday night will take 7 days complete.

When a 4 Mbps ADSL subscriber is upgraded to the higher speed they can expect their service to drop for around 2 minutes while their service resets.

Higher speeds reported

Numerous ADSL subscribers have already reported higher speeds, syncing at speeds of up to 10 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream.

Not everyone who is upgraded should however expect 10 Mbps speeds.  It is anticipated that users who are in the region of 1.5 km from the exchange will be upgraded to 10 Mbps while other users can expect speeds of around 8 Mbps.

If a service cannot synch at the highest speed it will be dropped from 10 Mbps to 8 Mbps, and if this does not work the speed will be decreased in intervals of 1 Mbps until it syncs without any stability issues.

The planned final date for the initial migration is 20 August.
